Coastal Survivors
1st Place - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB - OPEN COMPETITION
The broken-down group of pier pilings is located near Falmouth Heights on Cape Cod. These remaining pier pilings still stand straight and tall. The line of them point you directly to Martha's Vineyard. It's amazing they are still standing considering the pounding they receive during every Cape Cod storm. This image was taken with a four-minute long-exposure that allowed the ocean waves to become very smooth and serve a supporting role for the pier image and the setting sun.

Extraordinary Skaket
3rd Place - Fine Art America - Cape & The Islands Group Competition - June 2023
Skaket Beach, in Orleans on Cape Cod, is one of the most unique and enjoyable beaches to visit in New England. As part of the famous Cape Cod Bay tidal flats, the tide retreats a very long distance and reveals the most extraordinary series of parallel sand bars for everyone to enjoy.

Skaket - Another World
Featured Image - Fine Art America - Cape and Islands Group - August 2023
The sunset is from Skaket Beach in Orleans on Cape Cod. This is one on the best locations on the Cape to view a sunset any time of year. Skaket Beach, itself, has very special features that make this location a "must visit" when in Orleans, especially during low tide.

Vineyard Sound at The Heights
Featured Image - on the Home Page of Fine Art America - Sunset Group
Take the walk on Grand Avenue at Falmouth Heights Beach on Cape Cod and you will understand why it is called "The Heights". After passing the famous Falmouth Heights "Casino by the Sea" your walk will ascend to present the "grand view" of the ocean. If you take that walk at sunset, you could have a very special experience.

3rd Place - Open Category - Photo of the Year - Upper Cape Camera Club
The symbol of a tall, straight tree which is standing alone, high on a ridge can be interpreted in many ways. This evening, it's calm and warm as the setting sun completes the day and the moment

These very resilient wild flowers lean into the sun as they have survived another blizzard and enjoy being warmed by the winter sun.
Nobska Light Sunset
1st Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Seasonal Competition - 2023
It's quite the challenge to capture the image of the sun setting over the village of Woods Hole as well as the Nobska light as it broadcasts its steady signal across Martha's Vineyard and out to the horizon. This basic input represented a total of 20 shots that were blended and stitched together to make this panorama shot.

Snug Harbor at Dawn
2nd Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Competition
Panorama - The peaceful feeling that one experiences at Snug Harbor at dawn is one of those moments in life to always hold close. The stillness of the water is presenting reflections on everything close-by. The only sound is that of the early morning ducks. The statuesque homes at the water's edge standout as the occupants have not stirred in the early morning light. Right now, it's just you and this harbor moment.
Steps to No-Where
IMAGE OF THE YEAR - 2020 - Upper Cape Camera Club
As the sun was setting at Chapoquoit Beach, West Falmouth MA, the ocean's edge was advancing over the sand and rocks and to the stairs, which formally lead to a beautiful beach. One could view this image and have it serve as a reminder for one to "thoughtfully make your plans for your life's long-term goals" or it could become a dead end. Another interpretation is that this image is a good example of the impact of global warming and beach erosion on some of our most beautiful natural Cape Cod treasures.
Icy Ballet
IMAGE OF THE YEAR - Upper Cape Camera Club
IMAGE OF THE YEAR - New England Camera Council.
1ST Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Competition
This image was taken on one of the coldest days of the year on Cape Cod. The composition is set up to look straight down the pier pilings as if they were a double line of ballet dancers. When one studies the ice on the pier pilings, the ice takes on the appearance of ballet dancers in beautiful tutus. The two front pilings appear to have their arms raised. Now, quiet the ocean; enter the colors of sunset just above; cue the music for the "Icy Ballet."

Discovery in the Ripples
Honorable Mention - Upper Cape Camera Club - Seasonal Competition
Honorable Mention - Assigned Category - Photo of the Year - Upper Cape Camera Club
The low tide has uncovered a vast field of rippled sand on an isolated island on Cape Cod. As the setting sun broadcasts its warm glow over the rippled sand, a single sea shell emerges from the shadows.
INSIDE - OUT

3rd Place in "Reflections" competition - Upper Cape Camera Club - January 2024.
Unexpectedly, this Cape Cod sunset produced an incredible mirror reflection. When your eyes are limited to a fixed amount of viewing space, you can actually pick up the wider array of the colors presented during this grand event.
Wild Harbor - North Falmouth
3rd Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Seasonal Competition
And then, there was one. Everyone who knows this view would concur that this particular spot is one of most beautiful approaches to the ocean that exists on Cape Cod. The challenge has always been on how to best capture this magnificent seascape. There are several man-made distractions along with some created by nature. In addition, ultimate patience was required to capture the peak of the sunset sky and then take a 1/30 shot to capture everything that needed to be frozen (the boat, moorings and the two people fishing at the end of the jetty and the breeze moving the bushes) and then one 90 second exposure to create "ultimate calm" in the ocean water. I hope that you enjoy it.

A mid-summer sunset spreads golden light onto the water of Hen Cove in Bourne MA on Cape Cod. The dory retrieval system allows access to the boat directly from the shore and only getting your feet wet.
Harbor Evening
3rd Place - Upper Cape Camera Club Competition
A dramatic summer sunset at West Falmouth Harbor where beautiful shades of orange are reflected from the clouds onto the water. The natural beauty is punctuated with the bright red sail of the foreground sailboat and the vibrant green grass of the shoreline. Take the time to immerse yourself in the image and feel the pull of the harbor. To capture this image in one shot, I needed to use an ultra-wide-angle lens, a tripod and a remote shutter trigger to attain absolute stability to achieve a successful shot.
Showstopper
2nd Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Competition
A dreamy sunset on the Cape Cod shore is an experience to remember forever and have you returning to the Cape for similar wonderful vistas. This image does something that the direct sunset experience cannot accomplish and that is to take one minute of time and condense it into a single beautiful image. This is accomplished by using long exposure techniques. The human eye also cannot see the effect of the sunset rays creating a "blue hour" soon after it sets, well defined in Wikipedia.
The purpose of this one minute exposure is to create a dreamy look around the ocean rocks, a very calm looking sea and colorful clouds that are softened since they moving during the exposure.
Malachite Effect
3rd Place - Upper Cape Camera Club Open Competition
This wave is one of a series of panned images taken during sunset at Cape Cod's National Seashore. Panning the camera allowed each image to become softened to allow the general tone of colors and form to appear more like an abstract presentation. The term "malachite" comes from a green-like stone, which is known for its soft tonal colors. It's is reported that malachite opens the heart to unconditional love, encourages risk-taking and change.
Pointing to the Vineyard
3rd PLACE - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB - FALMOUTH ART CENTER DISPLAY
This iconic pier has become one of the "must photograph" locations on Cape Cod. The challenge is to be at the location when the conditions are perfect. When you approach the pier pilings from the beach, there is nothing remarkable about the scene. However, if you wait until the setting sun paints the distant sky and clouds with pastel colors and then you align your composition so that the pilings line up perfectly, you have the potential to create an image with impact. Finally, one needs to calm the moving water by adding a dark filter to the lens which permits a 103-second long exposure. Now you have created an image that truly represents the essence of Cape Cod. The sea gull also needed to remain still for the full exposure period – great luck!

Rocking the Rocks
1st Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Seasonal Competition
From the rock jetty of the Scituate Lighthouse, this Nor'easter was pounding the jetty that protects Scituate Harbor. The Scituate Light has been providing mariners with its brilliant lighted guidance since 1811.
Outflow - Tidal Flats
1st Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Seasonal Competition -
You may notice two people walking way out on the tidal flats that are located here at Paine's Creek in Brewster MA on Cape Cod. These tidal flats in Cape Cod Bay are one of the two largest salt water flats in the world. When the tide rushes out, like in this image, it creates a fast-flowing river as the water temporally departs to create a vast sand bar. The setting sun simply increases the overall beauty being presented
Nobska Sunset
3rd PLACE - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB - OPEN COMPETITION
The combination of photographing the setting sun in an image of Nobska Light is almost impossible due to its position of the lighthouse. However, one can capture the image of the setting sun as a reflection from the window of Nobska lighthouse.
Catboat Gateway
Cover Photo- Catboat Association Bulletin - Fall 2021
Two beautiful catboats are moored at the front of Wild Harbor at New Silver Beach in North Falmouth MA. The panorama was taken during the early morning stillness as the two catboats slowly moved to the push of the incoming tide and pulled from the restraints of their moorings. It took some time before both catboats became somewhat aligned without overlapping.
Sunset Blanket

Sometimes a sunset lands almost on top of you and forces you to stop everything and just reflect on the wonderful feeling of just being present.
Sunset for the Ages
HONORABLE MENTION - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB - OPEN COMPETITION
Have you ever walked on the beach during a sunset and climbed past what appears to be an ordinary jetty and you barely paused to view the scene before you? There, right at that spot, was great beauty before you! This shot was completed on a remote beach area in Falmouth on Cape Cod, just like I just described. The lower rocks on this jetty were quickly filling with seawater as the high tide pushed itself further onto the shore. By adding a dark filter to the camera lens, one can slow the water down and create a very smooth, peaceful texture. Using a 22 mm wide angle lens, I could move in very close to the jetty and the water’s edge and still get the sun setting on the horizon. I set up for a 57-second long exposure. The resulting image produced a contrast of the beautiful glow of the sun setting over the soft water and the rugged jetty as it transitioned into the night’s darkness.
The Day After
3rd Place - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB - OPEN COMPETITION
The snow from the previous day sits fresh on the landscape of Nobska Lighthouse and the famous section of road of the Falmouth Road Race. The sun peeked out from behind the clouds to shine brightly on the lighthouse and the Nobska museum. The billowing dark clouds were the perfect contrast to the snowy landscape and lighthouse. The curve in the road is the most famous section of the beautiful Falmouth Road Race during the summer as the runners stream through this section making it appear like a long serpent's tail.
Boatyard Artistry
Honorable Mention - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Competition
Boatyard Artistry is from inside the boat repair facility of Quissett Harbor, located near Woods Hole, MA and part of the attraction of The Knob. Boat repair work was being completed inside the facility on a beautiful sailboat. Outside, the fog has just burned off in the early morning sun and my attention turned to the window and the view from inside. The boat supports, located just outside the window, are part of the boatyard operation and used for supporting a boat while on the boatyard grounds.
Last Ray Over Old Silver
1st - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB COMPETITION
Each summer day there are hundreds of beach-goers at Old Silver Beach in North Falmouth, MA who walk past these four shore rocks. Only the children find them interesting to stop for a moment to climb on them or to explore around them. If you are patient and wait for the perfect tide level, the alignment of setting sun, calm seas and no water craft or swimmers, you can create an incredibly pleasing image.
That One Harbor
2nd PLACE - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB - OPEN COMPETITION
It's still dark as I arrive in the very early morning at Snug Harbor, located in West Falmouth on Cape Cod. The only sound one hears are fish jumping and splashing in the perfectly still water and an occasional call from a duck or other sea bird. The sun has risen just enough to spread its early morning glow onto the layer of clouds. The small boats are still in the water on this peaceful mid-fall morning.

Golden Light at Cleveland Ledge
Featured Image - Fine Art America - Cape Cod and the Islands Group - October 2023
Cape Cod has many unique and beautiful lighthouses dotting its landscape, all playing an important role in guiding mariners through its tricky waters. Because of the position of the Cleveland Ledge Light on Buzzards Bay, it is situated in the middle of some magnificent sunsets throughout the year.
Roadside Beauty

Members Choice as Best Image - Sunsets (2024)
An incredible "off-season" sunset at Nauset Beach in Orleans, MA and no-one is on the beach. The solitude of the "off season" gives one a deeper appreciation on the specialness of this Cape Cod coastal area. As one views the vastness in both the ocean and the sky, it makes you feel like a tiny speck on the shore - but appreciative of being there.

The foam, bubbles and receding tide melting into a sunset that mirrors the "wave-edge" hand in the distant shore reclaiming itself with the onslaught of the cresting waves threatening to wash it away. It makes you want to just sit and watch the surf surge and recede over the expansive beach.
Unforgettable
2nd PLACE - UPPER CAPE CAMERA CLUB - OPEN COMPETITION
Have you ever watched a full moon rise over the ocean? It's an event that will stay with you for a long time. This two-image composite was taken within ten minutes of each other during a warm summer evening on Cape Cod, North Falmouth Massachusetts. The clouds around the moon appeared like they were on fire as the orange brightness began to spread over the harbor and the sailboat at its mooring.
Always Vigilant
1st Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Competition
A very wintery scene greets the first morning light at Nobska Light, located in Woods Hole on Cape Cod. A single auto track shows the way up the winding road to Nobska Light. The beam from the lighthouse projects it's consistent light out toward Martha's Vineyard on this cold wintery morning.
Peaceful Sunrise
Honorable Mention - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Competition
The boat house, located in the center of West Falmouth Harbor, is one of the icons of Cape Cod and Falmouth Massachusetts. The picturesque dinghies tied up to the dock in the foreground present a very peaceful pose and serial reflections as the sun rises over the still harbor water.
Although the trees tend to lean to the right due to the southwest winds they normally experience. At this moment, there is no wind and no sound, just the peace of repose. This type of beautiful harbor scene is one of the reasons so many vacationers make their regular summer visit to Cape Cod or make Cape Cod their home.
Deluge Over Cleveland Ledge
South Coast Almanac Magazine - Lead Photograph in Feature Story of "7 Lights"
Cleveland Ledge Light emerges in a snow squall at Sunset. The lighthouse is positioned as a guide to merchant vessels as they travel through Buzzards Bay and the Cape Cod Canal. As the sun was setting close to the lighthouse, a squall developed directly over the lighthouse. Because of the darkness of the squall, it's light turned on early in the middle of the sunset.
Storm Warning
2nd Place - Upper Cape Camera Club - Open Competition (2024)
A cold mist descents upon a Woods Hole ocean dock as the daylight begins to fade. Calming the water by use of a 5-minute long exposure allows that feeling of peaceful solitude to creep into your soul. Alone, at the ocean's edge in December and not another person in sight - just the sound of the fog horn sending out it's warning. That's a feeling to remember.
Salt Pond - Evening for Swans

A study of light and seasons - Eastham MA
Salt Pond is a saltwater pond situated within the enormous Nauset Marsh, located in the background. Its complex of water channels extend for several miles through the marsh and enter and exit with the tide at the National Seashore. The pond is one of the most popular visitor sites on Cape Cod, as well as the most photographed.
Presented here is a pictorial study of light and seasons at Salt Pond. Most images were taken at either sunrise or sunset from the same location from one of the most beautiful vistas in the region.

As I view this photo, it immediately connects me to the Dierks Bentley song "Living". Surfing the National Seashore on Cape Cod during a killer sunset in December appears to be Living as this surfer's expression presents the absolute symbol of the verse "some days you're living"
Occasionally, we all should let loose and follow our passion and express this type of enjoyment.
ALONE

For this image, it was necessary to take two images and combine them. The first was a long exposure of the Falmouth Heights road approach in order to achieve the streaking auto lights that leads you to the moon. Second, it was necessary to use a 400 mm lens to capture the detail of the full moon as it rose over the uphill approach.
