NUBBLE
Nubble Lighthouse stands prominently on a rocky island, surrounded by calm blue waters and a cloudy sky. The red fuel house and the small white storage shed dot the landscape of the rolling hill leading up to the red-roofed house and the lighthouse, overall, evoking a sense of picturesque tranquility.
Constructed in 1879, Nubble had 30 lighthouse keepers in the 107 years of being a person-operated lighthouse. It became automated in 1987 - the last lighthouse in North America to be automated. On the far left side of the image is a "cable trolley" which is used by the Coast Guard to transport supplies to the Lighthouse. In earlier years, the trolly was used to send the Keeper's children to the mainland for their schooling.
The image is a "long exposure" used to calm the water surrounding the lighthouse island, which allows for a greater emphasis on the beautiful lighthouse itself.

This particular image presentation: Stage Harbor Light - 30 Second Long Exposure softened the foreground water and blurred and darkened the rapidly moving clouds, which provided a "soothing" view of the lighthouse and a sharp contrast to the deep blue hue of the clouds.
